In this time of physical distancing, we can begin to feel socially isolated and disconnected from our family, friends, and colleagues. Video calls, phone calls and texting can go a long way to helping us remember our connections to others. In addition, compassion meditation can also evoke deep feelings of kindness and empathy for those we love but can’t be with right now.

Kristen Neff, self-compassion researcher and author at the Center for Mindful Compassion, offers this 20-minute meditation on giving and receiving compassion.

For reflection alone or together:

What thoughts and feelings arose for you during this meditation?

What helps you connect with your own internal reservoirs of compassion?
