Strengthening Your Compassion Muscle - Part 3

Lovingkindness meditation is one of the oldest forms of compassion practice. With roots in Buddhist spirituality, lovingkindness meditation is a simple practice of wishing yourself, loved ones, acquaintances, and all beings well. There are multiple versions of this meditation and each are easily adapted to your own needs and spiritual beliefs. Most lovingkindness meditations begin with ourselves and then extend to others.

For practice alone or together:

Here is one lovingkindness meditation:

May I be strong and healthy, peaceful and at ease. May I be filled with lovingkindness and be happy.

After silently saying those words for yourself, repeat the same for someone close to you:

May s/he be strong and healthy, peaceful and at ease. May s/he be filled with lovingkindness and be happy.

And then, slowly and with your breath, continue for an acquaintance or "neutral" person:

May s/he be strong and healthy, peaceful and at ease. May s/he be filled with lovingkindness and be happy.

And, lastly, with kind attention, silently extend compassion for all living beings:

May all living beings be strong and healthy, peaceful and at ease. May all living beings be filled with lovingkindness and be happy.
