  1. To describe the theological, historical, and cultural contexts for a belief in miracles among African American patients. 

  2. To identify tools to ascertain a patient's and family's religious and spiritual beliefs.

  3. To develop strategies for more open and effective communication with patients and families who believe in miracles.

  4. To consider the principle of "ubuntu" as a basis for improved cross-cultural interaction and seriously ill patients and families.
